Another relatively untitled post
The Debt has reached 9 trillion dollars for the first time ever (it was under 6 trillion at the start of the Bush presidency). I should probably have some sort of reaction, but part of me sees that number, and I don’t even comprehend the magnitude of it. I mean, I know it’s a lot of money, but for someone who makes under 20,000 a year, it’s a number which seems theoritical, and I can’t wrap my mind around it.
Here is an interesting commentary about Kucinich’s proposed impeachment of Cheney. More interesting is the fact that a few Republicans sent it to committee, I believe for the express purpose of making cowards such as Nancy Pelosi (on Pelosi for a second, I feel rather silly for thinking she was going to do anything to change the situation in congress for the better) look silly for trying to block something that people who vote Democrat nationally favor at about a 3 to 1 ratio. It would be a good opportunity for the repubs to distance themselves from the Bush administration, but I don’t see it going that far. If it does gain traction, it would be interesting to see what effect it has on the Kucinich presidential run.
It’s interesting to see Pat Robertson rally behind the pro choice, pro civil union, Giuilani. This could help him I suppose, but I can’t see it making a huge amount of difference for the evangelicals, who will probably see the same lisping new york “conservative” that they always have. Robertson’s endorsement doesn’t change Giuilani’s record (which at one point also was pro gun control). The backing is based on the security issue, one where I find it staggering that Rudy has any credibility at all. The assumption is because he happened to be mayor 9/11, he will be better on terrorism I guess. If anyone else has a better explanation of this, I’d be all for hearing it.
MSNBC has sort of stumbled into being the news channel for left leaning viewers (mostly behind Keith Olbermann). Here is an interesting article which expands on it more than I feel like doing.
Rosie O’Donnell is not getting the slot after Olbermann, at least for the moment. I don’t have a problem with this. MSNBC should be looking at David Shuster, or Rachel Maddow. Either of these people could put on intellegent (and left leaning if that’s the aim) shows which would serve as a much better follow up than Rosie who would not bring any real credibility to the table, even if people agreed with her. It’s not enough to be loud and hate Bush. Olbermann combines journalism with commentary, where as I am thinking you wouldn’t get much of the former with Rosie. Shuster consistently impresses when I see him, and Maddow is on top of being intelligent, probably a natural follow up for Olbermann’s show because of her wit.
Colbert at the Glamour awards.
Suprise! Abstinence only sex education still doesn’t work.
Here’s a clip with Olbermann and Maddow talking impeachment.
Does anyone else think Dianne Feinstein looks like an animated corpse?
I was amazed to hear fringe candidate Ron Paul managed to raise 4.2 million dollars for his presidential candacy in a day. That would have been shocking if it hadn’t been someone that the media is ignoring on a regular basis, but for Ron Paul, one has to wonder if people will start paying attention to him, and if the Republican race is getting more interesting in the process.
Here’s a curious poll from Iowa (regarding the caucus).
Andrew Sullivan often has interesting little posts. Here’s one I found particularly interesting.
That’s all for now.
