And now for something completely different

I’ve been thinking lately about the foundation of a lot of my political views, and those of others and I got to thinking about the whole “state’s rights” thing. Liberal or conservative, whatever label you happen to possess, this is a crock of shit. I might strongly disagree with the person who says gay marriage is an abomination or any number of issues, but state’s rights are little more than modern day moral relativism. How much courage could one possibly have in their convictions if they’re willing to suggest that it’s wrong to discriminate against gays and lesbians, but if you live in Mississippi, you certainly have the right to disagree with that assessment and discriminate at will. While the end result of my position and a state’s rights person’s position on gay marriage might be the same, at least I’m willing to take a stand on why this is the case. I’m not hiding behind this idea that what’s good for Arkansas and what’s good for Massachusetts are different things. What’s right is right, and what’s wrong is wrong. I don’t care if states have discrepancies in how they use their tax money or what have you, but when it comes to people and how they’re treated, there’s right and wrong, and we should let it be known which we think is which.

Now on to the normal post.

This has nothing to do with politics, but I feel like I need to say I’m all for an Arrested Development movie. And, it might happen (after the writer’s strike, assuming the studios ever actually decide to pay the fucking writers).

Every now and again, Harry Reid does something which suggests he has a spine still. I’m bracing for another few months of dissapointment.

Al Gore accepted his Nobel peace prize (shared) today. It’s a reminder to me that I need to do better to make my lifestyle more green.

Why is anyone surprised that a right wing former minister at one point said something which seems pulled straight from the 50’s (because when it comes to social progressiveness, I look to my evangelical conservatives)? So Huckabee said something stupid. In 1998. Also he’s an idiot. Let’s talk about something else now.

This is nice to see, even if it will amount to nothing.

Craig Crawford has a little post about the lack of media attention John Edwards receives, relative to the two front runners. Here it is.

Why is no one on the Democratic side of the aisle making the environment a serious issue? I realize that by simply not being Republican, they stand to look better on that issue in the general election, but there would be more credibility talking about it down the road if it appeared that anyone really gave two-tenths of a shit now.

New Jersey might well be abolishing the death penalty here pretty soon. I hope to see it happen, and would like to see more serious discussion of this nature in other states.

Lewis Black clip! It’s from Comedy Central’s last laugh 2007.

This would be fantastic. Rachel Maddow getting her own show would instantly become a must watch news program in my apartment at least.

I think I need to pay more attention to Dan Abrams (his show follows Olbermann).

This is fucked up.

This is a little late, but here’s a must watch special comment from Olbermann.

To end here’s an interesting link.

I’m out.
