It’s all about the not working
So it’s been a good while since I’ve been here and a few things have happened in my absence. I acknowledged this in other areas, but it’s worth noting that the loss of George Carlin was a rather large one for the world of political leaning comedy. I have not a lot to add to the many tributes I’ve seen across the internets, but I wish I had taken the opportunity to see him when I could have.
There was a decent victory for the NRA this week, in the supreme court decision which ignores provisions of the second amendment which mention the connection to militia building, coming from the same people who would attack like dogs in the event that anyone might suggest that the entire amendment was poorly thought out for a society with automatic weapons and the like (with good reason, as the forefathers had no way of dealing with something that they simply had no idea was ever going to be an issue). Basically what it amounts to is that you can only ignore parts of the 2nd amendment if they are the parts which people like the twats at the NRA or Justice Scalia (the only way those two words might end up in the same sentence is when he is addressed by his title). We’ll see what develops in this area in the future, but this seems like a step in the wrong direction.
Here in lies the problem with the amount of campaigning one has to do in this country (particularly when we consider that it’s all superficial crap, have some debates closer to elections and be done with it, no stupid fucking ads, no taking things out of context). As much as I like attacking John McCain, this really isn’t his fault, nor is it Obama’s fault, rather it’s a broken system which causes people in public office who want to advance to a higher office out of necessity to stop doing their current job. Unfortunately it’s something I’ll have to deal with for the rest of my life (though I suppose if I’m ever in a position to say something about it where someone will actually listen, I will).
I’m not liking that Obama voted for a bill which included telecom immunity (though there have been generous theories as to why this might be the case). It seems like an outright betrayal of the constitution and of his own words on the subject.
The Unity rally was surprisingly decent. I went in thinking it was a cheesy idea that was doomed to failure of awkward proportions, but at times it looked like they genuinely liked each other, which is a good sign for the possibility of getting Hillary’s supporters on board.
Surprise! A Republican racist. Though he’s a moron for a good many other reasons anyway.
Daily show clips here and here.
I like that James Dobson is criticizing Obama for a “Fruitcake” interpretation of the Constitution. This coming from a man who would replace the constitution with the Old Testament.
Car that runs on water? Complete sentences? Apparently not, on the latter front.
Anyway it’s good to be back, and I’ll hopefully be back on my weeklyish posting schedule.
I’m out
